WICHITA — By popular demand, we’re debuting a new mini feature of sorts, which will be a regular “what’s up with that?” update on businesses we’ve already reported on that now are close to either opening, closing or changing in some way.

If you have any questions or suggestions for the list, just let us know.

Today’s collection:

– The new Braum’s at 201 N. Seneca is scheduled to open Nov. 8. This will replace the older Braum’s just around the corner on West Douglas, which will close after business on Nov. 7.

The new 5,756-square-foot store will feature the company’s latest design, which includes two drive-through lanes and seating for 86.

There’s no word yet on when construction might start on Braum’s stores planned near Harry and Rock and just north of the Residence Inn by Marriott at Plazzio at 13th and Greenwich. In May, a company spokesman said both stores are still happening.

Austin Herron is reopening Jack’s North Hi Carryout in Riverside Tuesday. Herron, whose grandmother purchased the business for him to run, says he’ll serve upgraded meat, bigger burgers and fresh-cut fries.

When Pigs Fly, the new barbecue restaurant father and son Ronnie and Brian Choy are planning on the west side with their wives, now has an opening date. The restaurant will open on Oct. 14 at 7011 W. Central in the Crossroads shopping center, which is on the southeast corner of Central and Ridge.

Jeff and Brandy Martin had planned to open their third Smallcakes, A Cupcakery, here. Instead, they’re now opening a third in the Kansas City area and plan to make Wichita their fourth stop.

“It’s just a matter of me getting out there,” Jeff Martin says.

He spent three weeks this summer in Los Angeles filming two television shows — one was another episode of “Cupcake Wars” and the other is a secret for now.

“That’s been crazy,” Martin says. “It’s a good crazy.”

He’s been to check out Wichita, though, and he’s found an area he likes.

“We’re very interested in Bradley Fair.”

There’s no deal yet, but Martin hopes to have some kind of announcement in the early part of 2011.
